How sweet it is....I got this bug from the original owners who bought it
new in 1963. A wonderful German couple named Wilmer and Eva. I don't
usually name my cars, but I couldn't help but call this beautiful bug,
Wilmer. One of the reasons that I don't give my cars a name is that I don't
want to lend them a human or emotional attachment. Well sure enough, I
have become very attached to this inanimate object of a bug called
Wilmer.
When I picked up the bug Eva took pictures and cried as I towed it
away. It had been sitting next to their garage for over 10 years. The
original paint had faded into a really nice patina and the interior was
pretty worn. Wilmer said that the 40 horse motor had been rebuilt not
long before he parked it. I contemplated leaving the patina but decided
to have it repainted the original Gulf Blue. The cool part was that I didn't
have to paint the dash, door jams, aprons, under the hood or deck lid
because they were all in such great condition. Both the aprons are the
straightest that I've ever seen. I did order a new interior and have it
professionally installed, including the headliner, seats, carpet, floor mats
and door panels. All the seals have been replaced as well.
Mechanically the bug drives like it rolled off the show room floor... I had
to tune-up and reseal the motor, but I'm sure Wilmer was right about it
being rebuilt. The trans axle shifts perfectly and doesn't whine or pop out
of any gears. The front end is very tight and doesn't clunk or wander
whats so ever. I replaced the Master cylinder, and the rest of the brake
system was in great shape so it stops smooth and straight. I kept the
original 6-Volt electrical system and all the lights, wipers, blinkers, etc.
work as they should thanks to a new Interstate battery.
I also added some fun accessories like the cool reproduction wood slat
roof rack, the rare old school fender skirts, the big emblem hubcaps,
European tail lights, new chrome trim, and factory painted two tone
wheels. Add to that, the color sanded and hand rubbed paint with two
tone interior and people just drool over it every where I go. That's maybe
why I won best of class at this years Bug-In here in Denver. Last year I
shared Best of Show with three other different model cars at the June
Bug and placed second in its class at the Grey Beard Rocky Mountain
Rod and Custom show. I am showing it again this year at the Rod and
Custom show this weekend November 27, 28, and 29th, if you want to
come see it in person. You can view pictures of it with some of my
collectibles as it sits right now shown in my photo gallery.(Sorry but the
collectibles aren't included)
So this has been my personal show car and fun driver for the last three
years. I really hate the thought of letting it go, but other projects are
calling my name and it's time to pass it on to a new loving home. I have a
feeling that I will be the one taking pictures and crying just like Eva when
it drives away....
