Spring is just around the corner and what a perfect opportunity to buy this fantastic
Westfalia Vanagon at a discounted price. When I originally purchased this van, I
had the intention of doing a Subaru engine conversion and keeping it myself. I had
the idea of doing Subaru conversions and using this Westy as the proto type. As
fate would have it, my bay window VW bus sales continue to grow and consume all
my time which has caused me to let this Vanagon go before my dream could be
realized.
So now this can become your dream.... Here's the deal, this is a great Pop-top full
Westfalia Vanagon which I had painted its original color, and up-graded the wheels
and tires to give it a way cool "syncro style" look. The van is a complete running
and driving vehicle. It has the 4 cylinder watercooled 1.9 liter engine which starts
and runs, but has a weird lifter cam noise. Great compression, good power, just
noisy. I found a used 1993 2.2 Subaru motor out of a wrecked Subaru with only 92k
miles on it and thought what the heck, this the perfect time to try something new.
My inspiration came from cruising around in a friend of mines Vanagon Westy with
the Subbee conversion and I still can't believe how powerful and quiet it is.
So I know that there are some VW purest who may not want to switch to a Subaru
motor. Maybe you have your own motor out of ol'Betsy that you want to swap over
to my nu'Betsy. Maybe you're mechanically inclined and want to fix, or rebuild the
existing motor. No problem, if you're not interested in the Subaru engine that I'm
including with the sale, I will reduce the final price by $500.00 and sell the motor at
another time.
Selling this Vanagon with a tired motor and including a good used Subaru motor is
a bit of an experiment for me. Normally, I would finish the job and sell the car as a
completed vehicle ready to hit the road. If it doesn't sell the way it is now I will
probably fix it myself and sell it at the height of camping season. These Westys with
the conversions are going for upwards of $15,000 to $20,000 when they're
complete.
So enough about the engine factor, lets talk about the van itself. Like I mentioned
earlier I had it repainted and put on new tires and wheels. It has a working propane
stove with a new propane tank and gauge assembly from "Go Westy" in California.
When I bought it this summer the previous owner was proud to show me that the
fridge worked, but I haven't tried it since. I do know that the sink, pump, and faucet
work as well. With the pop-top up you can sleep two "up-stairs" and two on the fold
out bed down below. This is a extremely versatile vehicle with tons of storage space
and room to move.
Mechanically, the brakes are in excellent condition. The transmission shifts smooth
and doesn't whine or pop out of any gears. All the electrical works and it has am
up-graded face-off CD player. I believe that the factory air conditioning works well
too. I also had a new windshield installed with new wiper blades for that clear view of
the world. The body was rust and damage free before the fresh coat of paint was
applied. There was very little bodywork required before the paint job, so you may
notice some very slight body waves and imperfections but you have to look pretty
darn close.
Whoever is the lucky high bidder of this Vanagon will want to have it shipped to
their location. I am more than willing to help arrange shipping and can usually get
very competitive rates. Good luck bidding and feel free to ask any questions. You
